Description
This is a multi-purpose farm building at Bryndinas, constructed from coursed blocks of shaley stone, which gives it a distinctive character and quality. It has a slate roof and features a coped gable with moulded kneelers on the left side. Facing the yard to the south, the barn includes a segmental-headed doorway made of freestone voussoirs, although this opening has been boarded up. On the right-hand jamb of the doorway, the inscription 'O AS 1740' can be found. The doorway is flanked by ventilation strips, with the right side being blocked.
To the right is the former stable, which contains a fixed 4-pane window and an original doorway that has a recessed boarded sliding door, added when it was converted into a cow house. At the end of the stable, there is a full-height vertical joint that marks the end of the original building. The cart shed features freestone quoins, one of which is inscribed 'O GS 1762'. It appears that the cart shed was originally open to full height, as the rubble-stone infill above a timber lintel differs in character from the rest of the structure. Below this lintel, the cart shed bay has been partially infilled to create two units, one of which includes a door and window. The right gable end has external stone steps leading to the granary doorway, while the left gable end has a roofless former lean-to.
On the rear side, there is a barn doorway that is slightly higher than the eaves level, with boarded doors. This doorway is flanked by ventilation strips, with the left-hand strip being blocked, and to the further left is an inserted doorway from when the building served as a cow house. A later roof covers the area between this building and the cow house and hay store located immediately to the north.
The barn and stable, now functioning as a single unit, retain four original tie-beam trusses with raking struts. The original gable end features a loading doorway, which now opens into the granary.
