Description

Friars Lower School is a Tudor-style building, primarily two stories high, featuring an asymmetrical front with twelve windows. It has a projecting central tower and an attached two-window headmaster’s house to the right. The exterior is constructed of snecked rubble with freestone dressings, which include a stringcourse, eaves band, and gable parapets with finials. The roofs are covered in slate, and there are stone chimney stacks to the right with polygonal brick flues, while the tower has a pyramidal roof. The windows are leaded with mullions and transoms, mostly consisting of three lights, and the ground floor features segmental-headed lights above the entrance.

The entrance tower is three stories tall and has paired three-light windows on the top floor with an overall Tudor label. The entrance itself is offset to the left and includes flanking pilasters, panelled double doors, and a stringcourse above that steps up over a stone-carved coat of arms dated 1577. The alternate bays on either side of the tower are gabled and advanced at the first floor, featuring tall windows that rise to the attic level, with one small attic window to the right of the tower. The headmaster’s house to the right has a projecting gable-ended cross range with a four-light attic window above a broad splayed bay.

At the northeast end, there are three gable ends that step, with one range projecting and featuring a segmental-headed entrance in the angle. Behind this is a three-story range that contains an unused attic dormitory. Attached to the rear is a single-storey range, and a further cross range extends from the central tower, with later additions (not shown on the 1901 map) creating two courtyards.

Inside, the building retains a plain staircase with panelled newels and turned balusters.
