Description

This is a single-storey stable range built in the 18th century, arranged in a splayed U-shape, opening to the east, with two-bay cartshed blocks at each end of the arms. The building is constructed of local rubble masonry with limestone dressings and massive quoins. The roof is covered with small, old slates, some of which are grouted, and is hipped over the cartsheds. It has red clay ridge tiles and a short brick ridge stack at the west end of the south arm; a section of the roof has been re-roofed with profiled asbestos sheeting. The doorways leading onto the yard each have elliptical heads constructed of limestone voussoirs. The central range is composed of two units, each with doorways at each end, while each arm contains six evenly spaced doorways. The cartsheds are characterised by wide, elliptically-arched openings with voussoir heads in facing walls of limestone ashlar. The rear of the range features a projecting stack along the north arm, as well as evenly spaced ventilation slits. Later alterations include the insertion of some doorways and windows.
