Description

The Bay House comprises a pair of reflected houses, numbers 47 and 49, on Castle Street. These are two storeys with attics and a basement. The front of the houses is rendered, with channelled rustication in the lower storey, and topped by mansard slate roofs with a moulded eaves cornice and two stacks at each end. The entrances are within the inner bays, each featuring panelled doors with plain overlights, sheltered by canopies supported by deep corbels. The outer bays are characterised by sash windows with four panes, set beneath keyed heads. The ground floor windows have a sill band and architraves incorporating consoles to stilted and moulded segmental heads with keystones. The first floor windows also feature four-pane sashes. The attic, also with a sill band, has gabled half dormers in the outer bays, each with four-pane sash windows framed by architraves similar to those of the first floor. Basement windows are segmental-headed. The front of the building retains original cast iron rainwater goods. Number 47 is distinguished by its original forecourt railings with spear finials, set on a dwarf wall, including an iron gate, while number 49 has replacement railings. The gable ends show pebble-dashed walls that are recessed between the stacks.
