Description

The enclosure walls at South Stack Lighthouse are low, white-washed rendered rubble walls that define a series of enclosures related to the lighthouse on South Stack Island. These walls protect the access path to the lighthouse from the bridge on the north side and outline the edge of the cliffs on the south side of the island. Additionally, the former garden or allotment for the lighthouse keepers' accommodation is enclosed on the south side of the lighthouse buildings. To the southwest of the lighthouse, parallel walls surround a flight of steps that leads down to a circular platform. This platform is likely the site of a low-level light intended for use when the higher light was obscured by fog, and it may have replaced an earlier low light established in 1832, which was a wooden lantern operating on an inclined railway.
