Description

Linlithgow Station, situated at High Port in Linlithgow, opened in 1842 as part of the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway. It was likely designed by John Miller, the engineer for the railway line, and was extended, probably in the 1870s, to accommodate the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway. The station’s interior was recast in 1986. A canopy was added at street level, and the platform frontage of the extension was replaced with diagonal boarding.

The original section of the station building is a two-storey, three-bay structure built of snecked sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and raised margins. An entrance is located at ground level, with access to the platform at the upper level. The rear elevation features three irregularly spaced windows at both ground and first floors; a bipartite window is situated on the left-hand side at ground level, and these are 4-pane sash and case windows. A truncated wallhead chimney is also present. The west elevation has an entrance on the left, a window to the right, two stair windows, a small window midway between the ground and first floors, and a bipartite window on the right-hand side at first floor level. A wallhead chimney with a plain blocked cornice is visible.

The platform elevation is a two-bay arrangement, with a gabled bay to the left, featuring a tall bipartite window with recent 8-pane fixed glazing. Decorations include moulded skewes, block skewputts and a truncated gable-head stack. A slightly recessed bay to the right provides access to the platform via an exit on the east front, with a window featuring 12-pane fixed glazing on the platform front. A piended roof covers most of the structure, with the exception of the gable on the platform side. A large stack is located on the east wallhead.

A later block, two-storeys high, extends to form an L-plan with the original building. The rear elevation has six bays and the platform elevation has four bays. It is constructed of coursed rubble with raised margins on the rear and east elevations. The rear elevation includes a door on the right and two windows to the left, with a bipartite window on the outer right. There are six irregularly spaced windows on the first floor, another door on the right, and all windows are sash and case with 4-pane glazing. The platform elevation's east wall is M-gabled, and its north gable acts as a screen wall to covered areas. A double-pitched awning is supported by four cast-iron columns, which are attached to the original building. These columns have curved brackets with floreated filigree work in their spandrels, and are of circular section with octagonal moulded bases and capitals. The glazed south slope of the roof is timber-framed and supported by steel joists. Recent globe lamps are in place. The east end of the south roof has a skylight, a roof-ridge ventilator for a now disused gents' lavatory, and three irregularly placed ridge stacks.
