Description
The cottages and stables at Union Canal in Woodcockdale were designed by engineer Hugh Baird around 1820. This long, low, two-storey building has a rectangular plan and is constructed from cream sandstone rubble with droved ashlar dressings.
On the south elevation, which faces the canal, there are twelve asymmetrical bays at ground level, featuring six doors. Two of these doors are set within single-storey advanced porches located in the second bays from the right and left. There is a blocked window in the third bay from the left. The first floor has eight asymmetrically placed windows, three of which are blocked.
The east side elevation includes a gabled return with a stone forestair. The north rear elevation has two windows at ground level and four windows on the first floor. The west side elevation features a forestair with an iron balustrade.
The building has boarded windows, a grey slate roof, and brick stacks at the gables.
