Uphall Church And Burial-Ground

Uphall Church and Burial-Ground dates from the later 12th century and has undergone significant alterations over time. Originally, it consisted of an aisleless nave, which includes a west tower, and a chancel. The building is constructed of rubble and features a gabled, slated roof. A round-arched south doorway is present. The chancel was extended in the 15th century, and a fore-stair, dated 1644, leads to the former Buchan loft. The upper part of the tower has been rebuilt, and a belfry was added in 1878, housing a bell that is dated 1503. The lower part of the tower serves as the burial place for the Earls of Buchan. The Shairp of Houston Aisle was added to the south around 1620 and features a barrel vault. There were also additions made to the north in 1878. The interior is plain, with the chancel arch having been removed.
