Description
The building is a public library located in the East End of West Calder, designed by William Baillie of Glasgow in 1903. It stands on an open site and features three front elevations, two of which are nearly symmetrical. The architectural style is a blend of Renaissance with Art Nouveau detailing, using contrasting grey and red ashlar. The windows predominantly have small-paned upper sashes.
The library is mainly a single-storey structure, but due to the sloping site, it has a two-storey elevation on the East End, which includes a central doorway and two outer canted windows that are also two-storey. The left return elevation, which consists of three bays, features the main entrance with an arched doorway and sidelights set in the centre gable at an upper level, flanked by Venetian windows. The building is topped with gabled slate roofs.
