Description

Bridgend Farmhouse is an early 19th century, two-storey house of a symmetrical three-bay rectangular plan, with classical detailing and flanked by recessed single-storey, single-bay wings. The house is constructed of cream-coloured, stugged and coursed sandstone rubble with droved ashlar dressings. Features include base and eaves courses, a cornice, blocking course, raised margins, and ground-floor windows with relieving arches.

The south (entrance) elevation has three bays; a central, pilastered doorpiece with a frieze, cornice, blocking course, and a fanlight over the deep-set door is flanked by windows. Regular fenestration is present at the first floor. The north (rear) elevation also has three bays with a stair window centrally located, a window to the right at ground level, and windows in the outer bays at both ground and first floor levels.

The wings to the right and left mirror each other. The right wing has a ground-floor window, a blind window above, a corniced blocking course, and abuts a wall to its right with a window on its return. The left wing has two bays on its return. The right wing extends north at a right angle to the main house, with a door and window on its west face, and two windows on its east face, the right window featuring boarded shutters at the lower level and a fixed pane above. A single-storey lean-to block is situated in the re-entrant angle between the north wing and the rear elevation of the house. Windows are 4-pane sash and case on the south face, 12-pane on the north face, and have plate glass lower sashes with 2-pane upper sashes in the wings. The roof is piended and slate-covered, with a roof light to the rear. Sandstone corniced end stacks are also present. Bridgend Farm, located to the west, is listed separately. The statutory address is Bridgend Farmhouse.
