Description

Gateside is a mid-19th century house with later 19th century additions. It is a two-storey, three-bay structure featuring a single-storey wing and a gig-house at the rear.

The house is constructed from cream sandstone rubble, which is squared and coursed on the north elevation, and has a rendered porch. The north (entrance) elevation has three widely spaced bays, with a later 19th century porch at the center that has a gabled roof and finial, along with bargeboard and kingpost details at the apex. The porch includes a fanlit, six-panelled door, with narrow border-glazed windows on the sides. There are windows to the right and left, and symmetrically placed windows on the first floor.

On the east elevation, there is a bipartite window at ground level in the center. The west elevation also features a bipartite window at ground level in the center, a single window on the first floor to the right, and another window in the two-storey wing to the outer right, which is a later 19th century addition.

The south (rear) elevation is two-storey with a gabled single bay wing projecting to the left, containing a window at both ground and first floor levels. There is a lower single-storey wing projecting from the center, which connects to the gig-house via a low wall that includes a doorway.

The house features 12-pane sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, ashlar coped skews, and corniced sandstone stacks at the gables, along with an original display of cans.

The gig-house is also built from cream sandstone rubble. Its west (entrance) elevation has three bays, with a gabled bay at the center that includes a window and a brick apex stack. There is a window to the left and a segmental gig-arch to the right with two-leaf boarded doors. The south (rear) elevation has an advanced block to the left with a small window, a cat-slide roof, and two recessed windows to the right.

The gig-house features 12-pane sash and case windows, with boarded shutters on the lower parts and fixed glazing on the upper parts of the rear windows. It has a black pantiled piended roof.

The boundary wall is made of rubble and runs along the Linlithgow-Edinburgh road, featuring a taller gateway with a boarded door.
