Description

This is a late 19th century school building located in Sheephousehill, Fauldhouse. It is an 11-bay, three-story symmetrical structure forming a “U” shape, with a large main hall situated on the south side within the interior of the “U”. Two-story wings accommodate large art rooms. The building is constructed from stugged and snecked masonry, with decorative stringcourses, ball finials, and crowstepped gables. Windows are bipartite and tripartite, mullioned and transomed, and feature hood moulds. The roof is covered in slate.

The south elevation presents a 9-bay block flanked by recessed, single-bay gabled wings. The central three bays of the main block are gabled and slightly projected. Double stringcourses, the upper one hoodmoulded, divide the second and third stories. The third story's central arrangement features three windows with a panel inscribed "FAULDHOUSE SCHOOL”. A moulded cornice with a parapet and moulded cope is present, with a roundel in the gable inscribed "WHITBURN PARISH SCHOOL BOARD.” The gable has coping, skews and a thistle finial at its apex. The outer bays have a bipartite window followed by a single window, with an entrance on the outer ground floor bay of each side. A deep parapet is raised slightly at the corners. The ground floor of the re-entrant wall is advanced with a stone set-off and a single window on each story. The wings are identical, featuring a central tripartite window, a double stringcourse (the upper one hoodmoulded), and a larger second-floor tripartite window with a segmental hoodmould, both transomed. Ventilation slits are present, along with a crowstepped gable and a ball finial.

The west elevation has a centrally advanced crowstepped gable. Two bipartite windows are positioned centrally. A flanking bay to the left features a single bipartite window on each floor, which breaks the eaves as a dormerhead gablet. The right side exhibits a single-story advanced entrance block with a deep parapet and slate roof, a door in the re-entrant angle, and three windows on the west elevation. The second floor of the main building to the right has a single window and a tripartite window breaking the eaves as a dormerhead gablet in the outer bay. All windows are transomed.

The east (side) elevation is almost identical to the west elevation, with variations in the window grouping of the entrance block and the second floor of the main building. A centrally advanced crowstepped gable is flanked by a single window to the left and, to the immediate right, a bipartite window breaking the eaves as a dormerhead gablet.

The north elevation has a five-bay centre with three bipartite windows on each floor, all with transomes, and a single door in the outer bay with a glazed head. Re-entrant angles have a single tripartite window on the ground floor (west side) and a bipartite window with a dormerhead gablet (east side). The gabled ends are plain with two windows, placed asymmetrically. Tall slated roofs top the building, and a central lead ventilator has been truncated.

The interior main hall features a parquet floor and a wagon roof with decorated king post trusses. A blank oculus is positioned in the west end wall.
