Description

This is a late 18th and early 19th century steading, originally part of Buchanan Home Farm, with alterations and a later 20th-century flat roof addition. The layout is a 2-storey farmhouse with flanking single-storey, L-shaped farm outbuilding wings forming a U-plan, and a pair of separate 2-storey, square-plan pavilion blocks attached to later farm buildings to the north. The design is symmetrical, featuring regular window placement on the farmhouse and projecting bays on the main south elevation. The walls are harled, with an eaves cornice on the main complex.

The south (principal) elevation has a 3-bay farmhouse at the centre, with a 20th-century piended-roofed porch over the central entrance, and a panelled timber door set back behind it. Flanking windows are present on the ground and first floors, with a further window above. Two 20th-century dormers have been inserted into the roof, and a skylight is located between them. A first-floor window is visible on the left return. The flanking single-storey wings are set back slightly, with two windows on the right-hand wing and one enlarged window (likely formerly two) on the left-hand wing. Slightly projecting, piended-roofed bays are located at the end of each wing, each with a single window.

The north and courtyard elevations show projecting single-storey wings extending from either side of the farmhouse. These have altered openings, with a 20th-century entrance (with a part-glazed door) on the right and a pair of windows on the left of each wing. A space between them provides access to the courtyard. A first-floor window is set back centrally on the house, with a narrow lean-to on the ground floor. The courtyard features irregular openings, and both wings return at right angles, partially enclosing it on the north side.

The east elevation features a projecting, pavilion-like bay at the end of the single-storey wing on the outer left. The long arm of the wing is set back to the right, with altered, irregular fenestration and a later porch to a re-entrant area.

The west elevation also includes a projecting, pavilion-like bay at the end of the single-storey wing on the outer right. The long arm is set back to the left; altered, irregular fenestration is present.

The pavilion blocks to the north are located at the south end of a later, significantly altered U-plan range of farm outbuildings. The eastern pavilion block has a later lean-to section attached to its east side. Both pavilions have large, inserted entrances on the south side. A single-storey range adjoins the western block to the north; a blocked entrance (formerly to an attached range) is visible on the north side of the eastern block. Stone steps lead to a first-floor entrance on the east side of the western block, with a blocked ground floor window on the west side. A ground floor opening is present on the west side of the eastern block.

UPVC windows are found on the farmhouse, while elsewhere, large-pane timber framed and UPVC casement/fixed frames with top hoppers are present. The roofs are grey slate, with a piended profile except for the farmhouse. Coped gablehead stacks with round cans are located on either side (east and west) of the farmhouse. The interior was not inspected in 1999.
