Description

Drumsyniebeg Farm is a small, early 19th century steading of a U-plan layout, with an attached cottage, dating to 1833. It is situated on relatively flat ground above the west bank of the River Goil and represents a little-altered example of a modest farm complex from the period.

The steading faces east towards the river, comprising a long west range with projecting north and south ranges. The cottage adjoins the north range at a right angle, presenting a three-bay front with a central door and two dormers in the pitched roof. The cottage is simple in design, but has an unusual eaves course. This eaves course is largely obscured by overhanging sparred eaves, which are repeated on the dormer windows, suggesting a possible roof alteration occurred later, likely in line with the popular style in Lochgoilhead village during the mid to later 19th century.

The south elevation of the cottage displays two inscriptions; the first, on the lintel of the first-floor window, reads "Drumsyniebeg Cottage," and the second, on the return of the eaves course and partially obscured, bears the date "1833." The rear of the cottage incorporates part of the north range into the living space, and a single-storey lean-to extension has been added on the south side of that range. A random rubble wall encloses the front garden ground of the cottage.

The steading buildings primarily feature slit ventilation openings on their outer faces, with larger windows and doors facing into the sheltered yard. A segmentally-headed cart arch is centrally located in the long west range, leading into the cart shed. To the right of the cart shed, the end of the west range and part of the north range were used for hay and grain storage. To the left of the cart shed, a byre occupies the end of the west range and part of the south range, with the remaining portion of the south range used for stabling.

Located northwest of the steading is a small, square, unroofed latrine building, with a drainage hole at the base of the north wall.

Access to the interior was not possible during a resurvey in 2004.

The buildings are constructed of random rubble, with sections painted with thin lime render; the rear of the west range is unpainted. Rough rubble defines the quoins, margins and lintels of the steading ranges. The cottage has droved narrow margins with broadly droved tabs to quoins and openings. Modern timber windows are found on the cottage while the steading features timber windows and timber-boarded doors. The roofs are pitched, with a piended end to the south range, and are mainly covered in graded slate, with some Welsh slate on the front pitch of the cottage. The cottage also has two harled coped gable-head stacks with octagonal cans, and a brick ridge stack on the north range. Rainwater goods are a mix of plastic and cast-iron.
