Description
The walled garden with sundial is part of William Simpson's home in Plean, built between 1833 and 1837, with an addition made around 1860. The original house features a walled enclosure topped with ashlar copes and exhibits a symmetrical picturesque design. It includes a basement with a good railed area, a ground floor, and an attic. The exterior is constructed of carefully droved ashlar with finely droved dressings and chamfered angles with hook-stops.
A sundial with a facetted head sits on a plinth, engraved with "William Simpson's Home, 1838." The entrance is located to the north in a slightly recessed panel and includes a decorative fanlight. The windows feature lying-pane glazing, with 8 and 12-pane designs, and stilted gablets for the attic windows. There is a two-window bow on the east side. An addition to the west is in a similar style, with layer windows and 4-pane glazing. A single-storey range on the west has deep verandahs, slate roofs, and ridge stalks with diamond flues, some of which have been cut down. The walled garden to the north is made of square rubble.
