Description
This is a former Free Church manse, built in 1848. It is a two-storey, three-bay T-plan building with a single-storey, single-bay outbuilding originally attached to the north. The building was extended in 1996 to form an L-plan. It is constructed of coursed and snecked red sandstone rubble with droved yellow sandstone ashlar dressings, stone cills, a base course, chamfered vertical margins, and quoins at the arrises of the main block. The east elevation has a shallow block pediment over the front door, and hoodmoulded windows to the south and east. Overhanging, bracketed eaves and gabled breaking eaves dormers are also present.
The principal, east-facing elevation features a central timber-panelled door with a border-glazed fanlight, a plain chamfered architrave, and a bracketed block pediment. An advanced gabled bay is on the left, with a hoodmoulded ground-floor window and an identical window above. A ground-floor window with a hoodmould is present in the right-hand bay, and a smaller window was later inserted to the right of the entrance. Two gabled breaking eaves dormers are centred above the entrance and the right-hand bay. A 1996 extension forms a garage to the far right with a Velux window.
The north elevation is a plain gable and wallhead to the 1996 single-storey extension.
The west, or rear, elevation has a two-leaf glazed timber door and a rectangular fanlight inserted in 1996, positioned between the central and left hand bays. A ground floor window is to the left, with a gabled breaking eaves dormer above. A small ground floor window is to the right of the entrance, and a large stair window is in the central bay. An advanced gabled bay is on the right, featuring a ground-floor window and matching first-floor window. A central Velux rooflight and a cast-iron rooflight are also present. A single-storey outbuilding range adjoins to the far left; the original single bay has a timber boarded and glazed door leading to the main block, while further additions include door and window openings to the 1996 garage extension and a conservatory wing at a right angle.
The south elevation is three bays wide, with a central gabled breaking eaves dormer and ground-floor windows to the outer bays, each with a hoodmould.
The building predominantly has 14-pane timber sash and case windows with lying pane glazing. The pitched roofs are covered in grey slates, and there are coped and banded stacks to the central ridge and north gable. A smaller coped stack is present on the original single-storey outbuilding to the north, where it joins the 1996 garage extension, along with circular clay cans.
The interior retains its original layout, with replacement tiles in the vestibule. The east sitting room features an original plain timber pilastered chimneypiece. A stone staircase is located to the rear of the plan, with decorative cast-iron balusters and a mahogany handrail.
A low coped boundary wall constructed of coursed red sandstone rubble is located to the east, and obelisk gatepiers are situated to the northeast.
