Description

The byewash, designed by John F Bateman in 1856, is a roughly rectangular masonry enclosure featuring a bowed projection on the east side. The outer face is constructed of bull-faced snecked red sandstone, while the inner face is polished ashlar. It has rounded copes and an outflow arch that directs water downhill to the west.

Inside, there is a central cast-iron trough that carries a conduit between arched openings, which are accented by prominent voussoirs. Shallow steps are located on each side, and an entrance gate is positioned over the northern arch. The masonry structure is designed to guide the burn to flow underneath the conduit at right angles.

The access chamber, built by James M Gale in 1890, is a subterranean space featuring a cylindrical snecked sandstone ventilation shaft with an access gate and a domed wrought-iron 'birdcage' top. There are external steps leading to the chamber, which is surrounded by retaining walls and railings. Security covers were added in 2007.

The enclosure, dating from the early 20th century, includes simple iron railings to the north and east that connect to an earlier rubble field boundary wall on the west. There is an iron foot gate to the north of the byewash and an iron vehicle gate to the south, both designed in the standard style of the Glasgow Corporation Water Works.
