Description
Ballewan Byewash 2, built in 1856 by John F Bateman, is a former water works for Glasgow. It is a roughly rectangular and symmetrical masonry enclosure situated on a sloping site, with walls that step up the hillside. The structure features a bowed projection at the eastern end and a round-arched opening at the western end that leads to the outflow channel. The outer face is made of bull-faced snecked red sandstone, while the inner face is polished ashlar, topped with rounded copes.
Inside, there is a central cast-iron trough that carries a conduit between the arched openings, which are accented by prominent voussoirs. Shallow steps are located on each side of the trough, and entrance gates are positioned over the arches. The masonry structure is designed to direct the burn to flow underneath the conduit at right angles.
