Description

Provan is an intact two-storey villa with an attic and basement, built in 1906. It is set in spacious landscaped grounds behind a plain rubble wall that faces Newton Crescent. This villa was reportedly constructed as a dower house for the Stewart family, known for their steel manufacturing business, with their Aultwharrie House located to the south.

The villa features a distinctive design with multi-paned windows throughout. It has a gable-ended rectangular plan and a stone-faced full-height bay with Venetian windows on the long north front, which serves as the entrance. The remainder of the building is entirely harled, with ashlar or timber detailing. A porch is tucked into the angle alongside the entrance, and there is a projecting four-bayed conservatory on the south long wall, over which the main roof is swept. The west gable includes a two-storey box window that lights the drawing room and master bedroom. The windows are of various designs, including casements, bows, semi-circular, and Jacobean-dormered styles. There are three plain harled chimney stacks.

Inside, the main rooms are located towards the west. The large hall, which is nearly full-depth, contains a timbered main stair and opens into the conservatory. The drawing room is situated to the west (right side) of the hall and is also full-depth, while the dining room adjoins the hall on the left.
