Description
31-39 Barnton Street is a classical tenement building constructed around 1908. It is a four-storey structure with 18 bays, featuring shops on the ground floor. The exterior is made of cream sandstone polished ashlar and includes several architectural details such as a cill course for the first-floor windows, brackets for the dividing band course, cill courses for the second and third-floor windows, dentilled eaves, and a cornice.
The entrance elevation is organized in groups of six bays. The tenement door for Nos 11-19 is located to the left of the center, with bipartite windows on all floors in the two central bays above. The second and third-floor bays are set forward, with the second-floor windows framed in panels that have dentilled cornices. The third-floor windows feature lugged, round-arched architraves and a blank inscription panel between them. A small, central, pedimented window is situated in the gablehead. The penultimate bays on the left and right also have bipartite windows on all floors, and the outer left and right bays contain full-height, three-light canted windows that break the eaves.
For Nos 23-29 and 31-39, there is a tenement doorway to the left of center for Nos 23-29, with single windows in the two central bays on the first floor above and corresponding bays at Nos 31-39. The second and third-floor bays are again advanced, with the second-floor windows set in panels featuring dentilled cornices and the third-floor windows having segmental-arched architraves. Single windows are set in the gableheads, and the penultimate bays on the outer left and right have single windows on all floors, with the second-floor windows featuring segmental-arched hoodmoulds. The outer left and right bays also have full-height, three-light canted windows that break the eaves. The building has a grey slate pitched roof with a coped wallhead and ridge stacks, and it features a variety of plate glass and small-paned timber sash and case windows, as well as some modern pivot windows.
