Description
36 Barnton Street in Stirling is a later 19th-century building featuring three storeys and an attic, designed as a symmetrical, seven-bay classical tenement with shops on the ground floor. The principal elevation is constructed of cream sandstone ashlar, while the side and rear are made of coursed rubble. Notable architectural details include a guilloche frieze above the first-floor windows, decorative carving above the first-floor windows set in advanced, corniced architraves, a cill course and advanced architraves for the second-floor windows, an eaves course, a cornice, and a blocking course, as well as triangular pediments on the dormers.
On the west (entrance) elevation, there is a central modern tenement door at ground level, with a single window above it on the first floor and another single window on the second floor. A single dormer is present, along with bipartite windows in the flanking bays on both the first and second floors, and bipartite dormers above. The bays on the penultimate right and left feature single windows on both floors and in the dormers, while the outer bays have bipartite windows on both floors and in the dormers. The windows are predominantly made of plate glass and timber, with sash and case designs, although some modern pivot windows are also included. The roof is covered with grey slate, showcasing a fish-scale and diamond pattern in its slating.
