Description
This is a steading and farmhouse group dating from around 1871, designed by William Leiper for Cornhill House, which was built by Alex Kay. It forms the Home Farm for Cornhill House. The farmhouse is a single-storey and attic building constructed of random rubble with sandstone dressings. The elevation to the roadway is three bays, with each bay featuring an open eaved gable. An entrance is located to the left of the centre bay, and a timber-mullioned and transomed canted bay window is positioned on the left-hand bay at ground floor level. The centre and right-hand bays have wooden mullioned and transomed bipartites, with relieving arches above, and a cill course. Attic windows are bipartites with mullions and a cill course within each gable. A porch with a catslide roof extends from the right-hand side.
The steading is arranged in a U-plan, comprising a single-storey and attic block, a horse engine house, and a detached barn. It is also constructed of random rubble with sandstone dressings, featuring irregular fenestration. The centre range has prominent skylights, while the inner faces of the side ranges incorporate gablet ventilators. The threshing barn has a dormer hoist door positioned under a slated gable on its outer face.
The horse engine house has a polygonal roof supported by stone piers, with wide openings, and abuts the threshing barn. The detached barn, linked to the main range by later buildings, has a stone base, two tiers of slit ventilators, a vertically slatted wooden band below a piended roof.
The roofs are all slated, with open eaves and prominent rafter ends. This is one of two steadings known to have been designed by Leiper; the other is located at Glendarvel House, Kilmodan in the Argyll and Bute District.
