Description
Cornhill House was designed by William Leiper for Alexander Kay in 1871, incorporating a previous house from around 1840 at the southeast. This building showcases early French Gothic architecture. It is constructed of snecked rubble and features a two-storey section with a three-storey and attic tower at the northern angle. The northeast entrance elevation includes a two-storey section with an angle turret and a projecting round-arched porch. The earlier two-storey, three-window classic villa to the southeast has a pedimented anta doorpiece, made of whinstone with freestone dressings, and a piended slated roof.
Leiper also added single-storey outbuildings to the southwest, which are partly circular with a conical roof. The northern angle tower features a circular corner turret with a conical roof that is corbelled from a squat angle shaft. It has cantilever-balconied second-floor windows, a truncated pyramid roof with stone dormers, and tall chimney stacks. The platform of the tower is adorned with wrought-iron cresting.
The northwest elevation has a canted front that transitions to a circular shape at the first floor, featuring an oriel window with a spired roof. The southwest elevation includes a large canted bay, also with a spired roof, both sections having hoodmoulded round-arched windows on the ground floor, colonnettes, and pendant double-arch sinkings in the lintels at the first floor, topped with a quatrefoiled parapet. The lower two-storey southeast wing has tall slated roofs with elaborate wrought-iron finials.
