Description
This is a mid-19th century former manse, extended in the later 19th century, situated in Kirkwood, Coulter. It is a T-plan building constructed of dark whinstone rubble with cream ashlar dressings, and has a grey slate roof with bracketed eaves and plain bargeboards. A base course runs along the front, and there are corniced stacks, some relating to the later addition. The original windows were 12-pane timber sash and case, some of which have been altered; the addition has 2-pane timber sash and case windows.
The front elevation features a gabled section in the centre, with a three-light bowed window on the ground floor and a bipartite window above it. A panelled door with a fanlight is located at the re-entrant angle. There is a later window with octagonal glazing to the left, and a two-pane window above. A single window is visible on the ground floor to the left return elevation, along with a single window and a gable-headed bipartite window rising through the eaves to the first floor. Further original windows with their original glazing are located on the front elevation to the left, and a bipartite window and original window are on the first floor to the right. A stable wing is located to the left, single storey with five blind windows and a boarded ladder door to the left return gable. A further stable wing, also single storey, is situated to the right, with two top-hopper multi-pane windows.
The rear elevation includes a single-storey, pentice-roofed bay in the centre, with a window to the left and right, and what may have been a stair window on the first floor centre. There are two rooflights; a stable is to the right, with a catslide roofed vehicle entrance to the left and two boarded doors to the right. A stable is also located to the left, with a large vehicle opening.
The interior retains original joinery, cornices and some fireplaces, as well as decorative cast-iron balusters. Alterations were made to the original front doorway and staircase following the addition. The left stable has an irregular cobbled floor, five timber trevises, and a ladder, purportedly for clearing gutters, above the ceiling joists adjoining the ladder door.
A single-storey, three-bay former Beadle’s Cottage is located nearby, with a later addition to the rear. It has modern rendering, a slate roof with bracketed eaves, a boarded door with a fanlight, four-pane timber sash and case windows, and corniced ridge stacks.
