Description

This is a mid-19th century building, with a later 19th-century extension, originally part of Kirkwood Old Manse. It is a 2-storey, T-plan former manse, with adjoining stables and a separate former beadle’s cottage.

The main building is constructed of dark whinstone rubble with cream ashlar dressings, topped with a grey slate roof featuring bracketed eaves and plain bargeboards. A base course runs along the exterior, and corniced stacks are visible. The original windows were timber sash and case with 12 panes to each, though some have been altered, with 2-pane sash and case windows in the later addition.

The front elevation features a gable that projects centrally, with a bowed, 3-light window on the ground floor and a bipartite window above. A panelled door with a fanlight is located at the re-entrant angle to the right; a later window with octagonal glazing sits to the left, with a 2-pane window above. A single window is present on the ground floor of the left return elevation, and a single window and gable-headed bipartite window rises through the eaves to the first floor. Further windows are located on the original front elevation, with original glazing on the left and a bipartite window and original window on the first floor to the right. A single-storey stable wing is located to the left, featuring five blind windows and a boarded ladder door to the left return gable. Another stable wing sits to the right with two top-hopper multi-pane windows.

The rear elevation incorporates a single-storey, pentice-roofed bay in the centre with windows to the left and right, a former stair window in the centre of the first floor, and a window to the left. A modern, out-of-character replacement window exists to the right. Two rooflights are also present. A catslide-roofed vehicle entrance is positioned to the left with two boarded doors, while a large vehicle opening is situated on the stable wing to the left.

The interior retains original joinery, cornices, some fireplaces, and decorative cast-iron balusters. Alterations were made to the original front doorway and staircase following the addition. The stable to the left of the front elevation contains an original, irregular cobbled floor, five timber trevises, and a ladder – purportedly used for clearing gutters – above the ceiling joists adjoining the ladder door.

The former beadle’s cottage is a single-storey, 3-bay cottage, with a later addition to the rear. It is rendered, with a slate roof featuring bracketed eaves, corniced ridge stacks, a boarded door with fanlight, and 4-pane timber sash and case windows.
