Description
The coach house and adjoining buildings date from around 1850 and were likely designed by John Baird II, with subsequent remodelling in the early 20th century. The complex is arranged in a U-shape and includes domestic accommodation, coach and motor houses, lofts, a meeting room originally for estate workers, and a cottage linked to the main range by an arch.
The buildings are constructed of whin rubble with contrasting sandstone dressings, featuring long and short detailing to quoins and windows, corniced stacks, and slate roofs. A low wall and gate piers enclose the courtyard on the northeast side. The central block has a through, round-arched pend and three swept dormers. Similar details are found to the rear, and the complex is flanked by two lower wings. The northwest range contains four carriage/motor houses on its interior face, with an irregular fenestration pattern and large gabled dormers on the northwest elevation. The southeast range houses stables and a loft above. Gable ends of the side ranges feature pairs of tall arched panels set within square frames in the lower parts, with the north gable being fenestrated.
The cottage to the southeast has a blocked northeast-facing door, now a window. Two tall, multi-pane gabled windows break the eaves, and a modern porch has been added to the rear. The complex appears on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey map from 1858-9. Stonebyres House was originally built for James Monteath by John Baird II.
