Description

North Wing of Bastel House, located on Hall Road in Nemphlar, is a two-storey, three-bay bastel house dating from the later 16th century to early 17th century, with various alterations and additions. These include an 18th century forestair, a mid to late 19th century wing to the north, and adjoining outbuildings. The house is built from rubble and was rendered around 1991. It features a grey slate roof, which is not original, and the skews have been removed. The glazing throughout the building is also later.

On the east (front) elevation, there is a later rubble forestair leading to a first-floor door, with a rubble lean-to alongside that obscures slit openings at the ground floor. A later timber porch is present at the first-floor doorway, and the flanking windows have been enlarged in the 18th or 19th century with raised concrete margins, one of which is partially blocked. A full-length box dormer has been added to the attic. The traditional entrance to the vaulted basement is located in the north gable behind the later wing.

The south (gable) elevation features an original window near the crown of the arch vault, which was formerly accompanied by a pair of original slit openings at a low level; there is also an enlarged window at the first floor.

Inside, the basement is barrel-vaulted and retains traditional features. There is a small internal stair leading to the first floor, where five slit windows are mostly blocked, although one slit survives on the west long wall. Harl conceals a blocked opening at the upper level above. Notably, a section of an engraved headstone is built into the ground floor interior wall of the front elevation (right-hand bay), with part of the inscription reading: "PORTIONER IN EIS / WHO DIED JUN."

The mid to late 19th century wing is a two-bay addition with an adjoining single-bay piended wing to the north gable, constructed of squared rubble with contrasting cream raised ashlar dressings and a deep eaves course. It features a door with a window to the right at ground level, and a window in the lower wing. There is also a large rubble outbuilding adjoining to the north, which includes ashlar dressings and a large vehicular opening to the south.
