Description
The Gasworks on Gasworks Road in Biggar was established by a joint stock company starting in 1839. The main structures are built of stone and include several notable features. The Exhauster House, dating from around 1914, contains a condenser that is likely original to the plant from that year. The Retort House, constructed in 1912, features nine hand-fired horizontal retorts made by Westwood and Wright Ltd of Brierley Hill.
There are two gasholders on the site; the original gasholder has been recently rebuilt but still retains its early triform latticed hoisting posts. The second gasholder was rebuilt in 1914. Additionally, there are castings for water tanks located under the gasholders that date from an earlier period.
