Description
Caretaker's Cottage, adjoining Culter Library and Reading Room in Coulter, was built in 1888. This single-storey village library has a small caretaker's cottage attached, which was enlarged at the rear in the 20th century. The building is designed in an L-plan.
The main elevation faces southeast and is constructed of whin rubble with contrasting ashlar dressings, while the flanks are rendered. The library section is to the left, featuring an advanced and finialed gable, which includes a tall pointed panel with a roll-moulded doorway and an inscription above. There are flanking lancet windows, and a decorative cast-iron porch is located in the re-entrant angle, leading to the door of the cottage. A single window is positioned to the right. The building has end stacks and a slate roof adorned with cast-iron cresting.
The property is set behind a low wall with iron railings, and the outer piers are topped with pointed panels.
