Description

David Dale's House, located at 5-7 Rosedale Street in New Lanark, dates from around 1790, with wings likely added after 1798 and the interior refitted in the late 19th century. This is a two-storey house with an attic and basement, featuring a three-bay rectangular plan and a symmetrical gabled design, complemented by single-storey, two-bay wings with piend roofs. The exterior is constructed of random sandstone rubble with droved ashlar dressings, and includes an eaves cornice and tabbed quoins strips. The windows are regularly spaced with raised margins, and the wings have tripartite windows. The rear elevation facing the street also has regular fenestration, highlighted by a central staircase window. Access is through a central two-leaf timber-panelled front door with a fanlight, raised one step above the ground.

The house predominantly features 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, with gablehead stacks topped with yellow clay cans and tall wallhead stacks on the wings. The roof of the main block is covered with graded grey slate, and there are plain railings surrounding the basement area.

Inside, the detailing is simple yet of good quality, mostly from the late 19th century. The timber stair features timber balusters and railings, while the hallway showcases an egg and dart cornice, with simpler cornices in other areas. The interior includes six-panelled timber doors, some of which have blocked fanlights. A classical chimneypiece, likely from the late 19th century, is found in the main room, alongside a large stone chimneybreast in the former kitchen.
