Description

Castle Mains is a mid-18th century, two-storey and attic house with three bays, constructed from coursed rubble and featuring ashlar dressings. It has a basement at the rear and several additions. Before 1824, boldly advanced square-plan two-storey, two-bay flanking wings were added. In the early 20th century, wings were added to the northeast and northwest, both made of stugged ashlar with polished dressings.

On the southeast elevation, the ground floor is infilled between the wings and faced with stugged ashlar, featuring a flat roof. It has a central pilastered doorpiece with a scrolled pediment and sidelights. There is an eaves course, cornice, and blocking course. The original first-floor windows have margins and a cill course that continues along the flanking wings. The house features two large box dormers and end stacks. The two-bay wings have single windows on the ground floor.

The northeast elevation includes a two-storey, four-bay wing with a continuous band course over the ground floor. The northwest elevation shows a band course over the basement and a cill course for the ground and first floors, which continues along the flanking wings. These wings have single windows centrally placed on each floor, with those on the ground floor set in recessed round-headed panels. There is a late 19th-century two-storey wing over a basement that projects five bays northwest from the center of the original house, with a cill course on the ground and first floors. Sash windows are present throughout, most with nine or twelve-pane glazing. Each elevation features an eaves course and cornice, with slate roofs that are piended at the extensions.
