Description

92-94 Cadzow Street in Hamilton is a large commercial building designed by Bonn of Babtie & Bonn, structural engineers, in 1903, as part of the reconstruction of the adjoining Cadzow Bridge. The building features a square plan with a splayed northeast angle, consisting of two storeys and a dormerless attic above bridge level, with four low storeys below. The upper part is constructed of red ashlar, while the lower part is made of bullfaced snecked rubble with ashlar dressings.

The Cadzow Street frontage has three wide keyblocked segmental arches connected by segment-headed doorways on the ground floor. The large openings feature traceried segments and centre mullions, and there are fine modern movement iron gates in the right-hand bay. The spandrels are channelled, and there are angle pilasters. The first floor has a plain five-window ashlar design with a continuous Art Deco-style iron balcony.

On the northwest frontage to the bridge, there are three bays above bridge level. The outer bays have a similar treatment to the Cadzow Street side, while the centre bay is unchannelled and framed with octagonal shafts. The arch in this bay is similar but has a keyblock integrated with sculptured corbelling of a semi-elliptical centre balcony. This section features three windows with bowed lintels at the first floor and shallow relief sculpture at the centre, along with a circular attic window above, set within a combination of straight and semi-circular gables topped with sculpture.

The substructure includes triplets of small square windows flanking a square stairway projection, a rusticated lunette arch at the base, and a bow at the top leading to a massive cantilevered balcony on the northwest flank, which serves as a flyover from Cadzow Bridge. The building has one window at the splayed angle and a rear frontage of snecked rubble with ashlar dressings, featuring two wide arches flanking a segment-headed window at bridge level and five windows above. The roof is piended and slated, with brick chimneys.
