Description

Laundry Cottage, part of the Carmichael House estate, dates to the late 18th century with subsequent alterations. Originally a laundry block, it consists of a single-storey and attic, three-bay, rectangular cottage with lower, single-storey wings flanking it; the west wing has two bays and the east wing has three. The walls are constructed of whinstone rubble with pale sandstone ashlar dressings. The cottage roof features a pair of mullioned bipartite dormers that break the eaves. Some mullioned bipartite windows are present on the flanking wings.

The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass, covered by a grey slate roof. The roof has coped skews and shouldered skewputts, along with coped end stacks and clay cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present.

Laundry Cottage is part of a group with the remnants of Carmichael House and Butlers Cottage and is shown on the first edition Ordnance Survey Map from 1856-9. It is a well-detailed example of an 18th century estate laundry building, altered in the mid 19th century when the detached wings of Carmichael House were connected by a Baronial addition (now partially demolished). The cottage has more recently been internally refurbished for use as holiday home accommodation.
