Description
Butler's Cottage is a single-storey, three-bay building dating to circa 1900. It was originally constructed as the butler's residence for Carmichael House at the end of the 19th century and is an important ancillary building within the Carmichael estate. The cottage is square in plan and symmetrical, with advanced gabled bays flanking a central porch recess. It is constructed from squared and snecked whinstone rubble, with pale sandstone ashlar dressings. The windows are mullioned, bipartite, with raised cills, and contain plate-glass within timber sash and case frames. The roof is grey slate, with stepped skews, roll-moulded skewputts, coped end stacks with clay cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The eaves feature moulded timber bargeboarding. The cottage is shown on the 3rd edition Ordnance Survey Map of 1908. It forms a group value with Carmichael House and Laundry Cottage, which are listed separately.
