Description

1-3 Mansfield Court, Muirburn Road, Glassford is an early 19th century former manse with later additions, now divided into three dwellings. The main building is a 2-storey, 3-bay structure in a roughly T-plan form, extended in the later 19th century by a 2-storey, single-bay addition on the right side. The south elevation, which faces Muirburn Road, is built of painted squared and coursed rubble with droved straight quoins and raised margins, while the sides and rear are rendered. Features include a stone base course, eaves course, stone cills, and a pilastered doorpiece with replacement 2-leaf door. The later 19th century addition has corniced and lugged windows, following a more refined style.

The principal south elevation comprises four bays arranged as three-one, with a central corniced and pilastered doorway, a corniced and canted 3-light bay window to the left, and a window to the right. Three first-floor windows sit above, the leftmost of which is lengthened. The advanced 2-storey addition to the far right features a corniced and lugged ground-floor window with a 1st floor window centred above.

The east elevation has three bays with a central corniced and lugged window, a small window to the far right, and two first-floor windows to the outer bays. The rear north elevation displays an advanced central 2-storey piended section with windows to right and left, flanked by a modern pitched-roof enclosed porch to the right and later additions to the left. The far right shows a similar 2-storey piended wide bay with a ground-floor window. The west elevation shows a plain gable to the right, with a recessed piended 2-storey single bay section to the left and later pitched-roof additions at ground level.

Windows are predominantly 4-pane timber sash and case on the south and east elevations, with some replacement look-alike timber windows and some 12-pane sash and case windows on the rear. The building has pitched and piended roofs with grey slates. Chimney stacks to the early 19th century section are coped ashlar, while the later 19th century addition has a corniced and shouldered ashlar stack.

The interior is divided into three separate dwellings. An original staircase remains intact, as does some original cornicing.

Adjacent to the main house is a single-storey former stable building (4 Mansfield Court), arranged as a rectangular plan with six bays and advanced piended pavilions to the outer bays. This was converted to a private dwelling circa 1990. It is rendered with straight quoins, features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, timber doors, pitched and piended roofs with grey slates, and a coped stack to the north. A modern conservatory has been added to the west.

A tall coped random rubble boundary wall fronts Muirburn Road, with droved monolithic stone gatepiers with rounded ends. Remains of a random rubble wall abut the house to the west.

The building was the former Glassford Manse, associated with the former Glassford Parish Kirk (now a ruin) and churchyard, which were established in the first half of the 17th century. Despite its subdivision into three separate dwellings, the manse retains much of its original character, and the adjacent stables has been sensitively converted into private accommodation.
