Description
233 High Street in Ayr is a three-storey, six-bay classical-style tenement building designed by John Murdoch in 1884. The building features a symmetrical layout with modern shopfronts on the ground floor, constructed from polished red ashlar. Architectural details include a modillion cornice above the shopfront, a cill course on the second floor, an eaves course, and a blocking course. Rusticated pilasters separate the two-bay groupings, and the first-floor windows have consoled pediments, with the central two bays featuring segmental arches. The second-floor windows are adorned with mini-pilasters.
On the entrance elevation, there is a keystone above a central elliptical-arched close. To the left, there are entrances to three shops on the ground floor, including a two-leaf glazed timber door leading to the shop on the right, which has shop windows adjacent. The shop on the left features a two-leaf timber door and a shop window to the right, with additional shop windows to the outer left. The entrance is part of the properties at Nos 233 and 235. The first and second floors have regular fenestration, with four-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring stone skews, apex stacks, and circular cans. The interiors were not seen in 1998.
