Manse, 63 Patna Road, Kirkmichael

This is an earlier 19th century manse, situated at 63 Patna Road, Kirkmichael. The building was rebuilt between 1836 and 1838 and the designs are attributed to William Burn. The house is constructed of stugged ashlar with ashlar dressings, quoins, and strings. It has an asymmetrical appearance with two storeys.

The east front features three bays, with a shallow, projecting central entrance bay. The moulded architrave above the doorhead incorporates a mask, flanked by two small grotesque heads. Each bay on the first floor has a single window. A single-storey canted bay extends from the south elevation, featuring two single lights above, and the gables are finialled. Windows are connected by a stepped string. A recessed bay is situated on the west side, with a tripartite window at ground floor and a single light above. The roof is gabled and covered in slate.

A later range of servants’ buildings is located to the north. To the east is a single-storey range, originally comprising a byre, coachhouse, and tack room, reportedly built from stone sourced from an older manse. According to mason records, the previous manse was pulled down around 1730, with a new one built around 1750. Conservation work was undertaken in 1991 by ARP Anthony Richardson & Partners (Scotland) Ltd and Patrick James Lorimer.
