Description

The Prestwick South Parish Church, built between 1882 and 1884 by James A Morris, is a rectangular plan Gothic church featuring a spire. It is constructed from coursed grey Craiksand sandstone with polished margins, and red sandstone rubble is used on the west side. The church has a base course, pointed-arch openings, chamfered reveals, and eaves course, along with buttresses.

The principal elevation is asymmetrical with three bays and a three-stage tower on the outer right. It includes a broad gabled and buttressed bay with a wide four-light hoodmoulded traceried window, which has a blind tripartite section at the apex topped with a stone finial. To the right, there is a lower entrance bay featuring a gabled doorpiece with a rounded-arch chamfered door surround, hoodmoulded with roll-moulded reveals, and a two-leaf boarded timber door with strap hinges. The outer left side has a narrow bay with lancet windows formed by the return of the aisle.

The square-plan three-stage tower has diagonal buttresses that rise to create cylindrical stone pinnacles. The first stage features a lancet window, while the second stage has paired louvred openings, and the tower culminates in a polygonal stone spire with a louvred lancet and a finial.

The northeast elevation is nearly symmetrical, showcasing five bipartite windows in the aisle bays. The right side is made of red sandstone blocks, while the center features a traceried bipartite window. The outer gabled bay on the right is constructed from red sandstone rubble.

Inside, the church consists of a nave and aisles, with pointed-arched arcades supported by elegant columns with stylised capitals. The interior includes simple pews and fine stained glass windows, including works by Oscar Paterson. The roof is made of grey slate, sweeping over the aisles, with a pierced terracotta ridge. Coped stone skews are present, along with gableted and blocked skewputts, and cast-iron rainwater goods with top hoppers.
