Description
The Broadway Cinema, located at 80 Main Street in Prestwick, was designed by Alister G MacDonald and built between 1934 and 1935. This former cinema features a two-storey, five-bay, flat-roofed Art Deco entrance block, with a pitched-roof auditorium situated behind it. The main facade is stepped towards the center, where the entrance bay is recessed between convex curved wings, with shops located on the ground floor. The structure is made of rendered bricks and synthetic stone on a steel frame, and includes a base course, a projecting canopy over the entrance, a string course, first-floor windows set in a slightly recessed band strip, and a coped wallhead.
On the principal elevation, there are four two-leaf glazed timber entrance doors adorned with an Art Deco glazing pattern, accompanied by narrow lying-pane glazed fanlights above. The central recessed entrance features marble floor tiles and a projecting canopy, with a tall block above that has three windows and a raised wallhead. Curved bays, slightly lower than the center, project on either side, housing shop fronts on the ground floor and windows on the first floor. The shop front for No 78, located to the right of the center, retains its original curved glass and lying-pane glazing, while the shop front for No 82, to the left of the center, has been altered. There are also single-storey shops on the outer right and left, which still retain some original glazing, with a full-height wall recessed behind.
At the rear, there is a large gabled brick auditorium. The glazing throughout includes lying-pane and plate glass, with some later replacements.
The interior, observed in 2008, largely retains its original layout, though some alterations have been made. It features Art Deco decoration with unique decorative elements, including timber panelling in various areas such as the stairwells and former café area. The auditorium has dado-height decorative stepped panelling and air vents with an unusual camel design. There are fixed-pane metal windows in some interior spaces, decorative cornicing, and timber panelled doors with small inset glass panels and stylized stepped triangular decorative architraves. Additionally, later squash courts have been inserted into the auditorium.
