Description
The Manse in Ballantrae dates back to 1736, with alterations made in the 18th century and later. This two-storey, three-bay gabled building features a 20th-century bowed, glazed single-storey porch at the front and a single-storey wing at the rear, creating an L-shaped plan. The exterior is grey-rendered stone with white-painted ashlar dressings and quoin strips. The windows are fairly regularly spaced, with raised ashlar margins and projecting cills. There are two piended dormers symmetrically positioned on the rear elevation.
The windows have 12-pane glazing and are made of timber sash and case. The building has ashlar-coped skews and gablehead stacks that are coped, with later red clay cans. Rainwater goods are a mix of cast-iron and plastic.
Inside, there is a curved, cantilevered stone staircase with cast-iron balusters and a polished wooden handrail. The principal rooms have timber-panelled window surrounds and presses, while most doors are timber-boarded. In the attic, there are three recesses containing panelling from box-bed frames, with the central one concealed by a timber-boarded door.
The property is enclosed by a random whinstone rubble boundary wall topped with a rough cement cope, and features a two-leaf spear-headed cast-iron gate.
