Description
Probably dating to the late 17th century, Ballantrae is a cylindrical tower windmill constructed of speckled masonry. There are remnants of a rubble vault extending to the west. The tower features segment-headed doorways on its north and south sides, with small openings positioned above the south doorway. Two relieving arches are located above the vault.
This is one of only twelve surviving vaulted tower windmills, a distinctive type primarily found in Scotland. These windmills represent the oldest group of industrial buildings in the country. Ballantrae is the least altered of this group, with the exception of a similar mill located at Hill House in Dunfermline.
The tower was recorded as a ruin in the 1855 Ordnance Survey. Its exceptional preservation and significance have resulted in an ‘A’ group value listing.
Further information can be found in G Douglas, M Oglethorpe and J R Hume’s publication, Scottish Windmills: A Survey.
