Description
Wallace's Monument, located on Barnweill Hill, is a Grade A listed Gothic tower designed by Robert Snodgrass Sr between 1855 and 1857. The tower has a square plan and consists of three stages, topped with a pinnacled parapet. It is constructed from polished sandstone ashlar and features a base course, string courses, and a corbelled, shouldered band course between the second and third stages. The parapet is machicolated and crenellated, adorned with circular angle pinnacles capped with conical roofs featuring thistle finials, as well as square-plan wallhead pinnacles topped with ogee caps and ball finials. The southeast elevation includes a diagonally-boarded timber door set within a Tudor-arched, roll-moulded doorway that has a hoodmould. Similar inscription recesses can be found on the other elevations. The second stage features round-arched recesses, while the third stage has paired round-arched recesses.
