Description

This is an early 19th-century schoolhouse, likely dating to around 1820, located in Swart Houll, Bressay. It comprises the main two-story, three-bay block and a single-story, two-bay wing to the east. The building is constructed from drystone rubble walls, featuring long and short dressings and quoins, with gables having straight skews.

The south-facing elevation, which is the entrance front, features a central doorway. Single window openings are above and at both floor levels in the left and right bays. The eastern wing has paired door openings in the left bay, and a small window in the right bay. The east and west gables are blank. The north-facing rear elevation features a single window offset to the left at ground and first floor levels, with an infilled doorway at ground floor to the right. Two windows are present in the wing on the left.

Coped apex stacks are visible on the gables. The interior has been stripped out, leaving only the fireplace openings and adjacent presses.

Flagstone rubble boundary walls extend east and west from the gables, enclosing areas to the south. These walls are part of the listed structure.

The building served as the parish schoolhouse on Bressay until the early 20th century. In its current roofless state, first noted in 1996, the building clearly demonstrates the drystone building technique using Bressay sandstone.
