Description
Chirnside Bridge is a mid 19th century, three-arched stone bridge, which includes one dry arch. It spans the Whiteadder Water and connects uneven bank levels. The bridge is constructed from squared, coursed, and stugged sandstone, featuring ashlar voussoirs in the arches. There are two irregular segmental arches over the water, each supported by a dividing cutwater buttress on either side, resting on a rusticated ashlar pier. Below the ashlar parapets, there is a bracketed string course. The dry arch is near-semicircular and has additional buttresses that separate it from the wet arches, providing a refuge above the bridge. There is evidence of former gabled structures that once abutted the bridge, and steps lead up from the bridge to the Paper Mill.
