Description
Dated 1858, although possibly incorporating earlier fabric, the mausoleum is a small, single-bay, rectangular Gothic chapel set within a walled enclosure. It is constructed of stugged ashlar stone with squared rubble to the sides and rear, and has ashlar dressings. The building features an eaves cornice and pointed-arch openings with trefoil details. Hoodmoulds adorn the openings.
The west-facing elevation is gabled and includes a deeply moulded doorway with a boarded timber door and a timber-louvered doorhead. Above the door is the Riddell family coat-of-arms and a Celtic cross finial with a dated base. The south and north elevations each feature two blocked, hoodmoulded pointed-arch openings. The east elevation has a central, hoodmoulded opening and a glazed trefoil in the gablehead.
The roof is covered with stone slates and has decorative, chevroned crenellations with block skewputts to the west and sawtooth skews to the east.
The mausoleum is enclosed by saddleback-coped boundary walls constructed of squared and snecked rubble, with inset ironwork railings and a two-leaf gate. The 1858 date may relate to repairs undertaken for General Sprot.
