Description
Barnlee, formerly known as Viola Cottage, is a late 18th to early 19th century, single-storey and attic cottage situated within an irregular terrace in Lilliesleaf. The cottage is harled with stone margins. The north-west (entrance) elevation is symmetrical and features steps leading up to a small timber porch with a boarded timber door centrally placed. Windows are located in the flanking bays, and three pedimented dormer windows break the eaves above. Plate glass glazing is found in timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered in grey slates, and it has coped ashlar stacks with cans, some of which are polygonal. Other features include plain, narrow bargeboarding. According to Groome’s Gazetteer, Lilliesleaf is a picturesque Border village notable for its variety of thatched and slated cottages interspersed with newer villas.
