Description

The Red Lion Inn, located on Crawford Street, was remodeled in 1905, incorporating earlier 19th-century elements. This two-storey, two-bay public house is designed in the Scottish Baronial revival style, featuring a square plan, a prominent bartizan, crow-stepped gables, and wide segmental arched openings at the ground level, all accented by prominent voussoirs. The exterior is rendered and washed, with polished ashlar dressings, a deep battered base course, a cill course, and an eaves course. The front elevation has regular fenestration.

The arched openings contain shallow, timber-mullioned canted windows, each topped with decorative timber finials. The left arch features a two-leaf timber panelled entrance door. The first floor has stone mullioned tripartite windows. The bartizan includes slit openings and battlements. The side elevation has an entrance and a pedimented window with an inscription at the first floor.

The lower part of the canted bays has small pane glazing in fixed light timber frames, with small-paned leaded lights above. The upper floor features timber sash and case windows with small-pane glazing above and plate glass below. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are ashlar-coped stacks with red and yellow clay cans, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.

Inside, the inn retains an Edwardian interior, complete with the original bar and gantry to the right. The dado height is lined with reeded timber panelling, and the coved ceiling is adorned with applied timber beams. The floor is made of terrazzo, outlined at the edges in red, grey, and black. A glazed timber screen divides the bar area. The timber chimneypiece and cast-iron grate are replacements. The bar counter on the right features Ionic pilasters, and the decorative timber gantry is supported by slender arched fluted Ionic columns with fretwork decoration on the arch soffits. There is a door to an office within the arch on the right, and above the gantry, six large spirit casks with brass taps are displayed.
