Description

This property comprises a circa 1785 lodge and a pair of sandstone ashlar gatepiers, originally forming the southern entrance to the Newhall Estate, as detailed in a separate listing. The gatepiers are square pillars with large pyramidal caps that slightly sweep towards their base, featuring modillions and chamfering near the apex.

The lodge is constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings. The west elevation showcases a glazed, flat-roofed porch centrally positioned, flanked by horizontal window openings. A round-arched window with intersecting astragals is found on the north gable, and a slightly lower, pitched-roof addition is also present. A lean-to timber addition extends from the south gable. The lodge features predominantly 8-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows and is roofed with grey slate. End stacks are topped with 'thackstanes,' indicating a former thatched roof, and include clay cans. Cast iron rainwater goods are also present.

These fine elements date from the 18th century and mark the southern entrance to the estates of Newhall, following Robert Brown's expansion of both the house and the estate. The cottage and former lodge is characterized by its low walls, horizontally arranged rectangular windows, and the 'thackstanes' at the base of the stacks. The driveway, once connecting Carlops to Maybank near Auchendinny and evidenced on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey Map (1856-9), is no longer accessible. The structure was previously known as 'Kitley Bridge' on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey Map.
