Description
The dovecot at Marchmont Avenue, built in 1749 by mason James Williamson, is a circular-plan, single-chambered tower that marks the end of Marchmont Avenue. It is constructed from squared, tooled, and coursed sandstone rubble, with sandstone ashlar dressings. The structure features a stepped base, corniced eaves, and a sandstone blocking course. There is a shouldered doorway on the southwest front, although the door is missing, and above it is a lugged rectangular frame with a missing panel. On the southeast side, there are two rows of flight holes accompanied by tiered sandstone ledges and moulded sandstone brackets. The dovecot is topped with a domed grey slate roof, which has a tapering cupola that includes flight holes at its base.
Inside, the dovecot contains 532 timber nesting boxes arranged along the walls in 19 tiers of 28 boxes each, with the lowest tier positioned 5 feet above the ground. The interior also features an open timber roof and retains a potence post.
