Description

Stobo Castle is a significant estate that was purchased in 1767 by James Montgomery, who was the Lord Advocate and later became the Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer. The castle itself was constructed by Sir James Montgomery, the second of Stobo, who took over from his father in 1803. The building was erected between 1805 and 1811, following designs by James Elliot. A port-cochere was added later, around 1849, by the Edinburgh architect John Lessels. The interior features a classical style, which contrasts with the medieval appearance of the exterior that resembles a fortress. The castle is set within an extensive landscaped parkland.
